Special Report: Halloween Safety Tips

Article by Jennifer Lalk

Halloween is a fun and exciting time for children and adults alike. It’s also a time when accidents and tragedies abound.

The following is a list of things you can do to ensure that your loved ones have a safe and fun Halloween.

Costumes

- Flame resistance. When picking out a costume for your child, always be sure to look for ones with a “flame resistant” label. Make certain every piece of the costume, wigs, beards, hats, scarves, masks is marked as “flame resistant”. Flame resistant items can catch fire, but resist burning and are easily extinguished once removed from the fire’s source.

- Avoid loose, billowy and baggy costumes. Jack-o-lanterns and candles are a big part of Halloween decorations and pose a great risk to anyone wearing a costume that is loose, billowy or baggy.- Costumes should be short enough to not trip your child.

- Bright material. Be sure your child’s costume is light or brightly colored so it can be easily seen in the dark. If your child has a dark costume, add strips of reflective tape so motorists can easily see him. Reflective tape can be found in most hardware or sporting goods stores and is an easy way to make sure your child is visible.

- Secure scarves and hats. Not only do scarves and hats present a potential fire hazard when not secured, they can also obstruct vision. It is very important that children can see clearly as they are out trick-or-treating so be sure to secure scarves, hats or any other item that may obstruct their vision.

- Face paint or makeup instead of masks. Masks should be avoided for the same reason; they are often designed so that the wearer cannot see well out of them. A safer alternative is to use makeup or face paint instead. If your child’s costume just won’t work without a mask, be sure to get one that fits your child well and that the eye holes are big enough that the child can see clearly with it on.

- Safe shoes. Wearing mother’s stilettos may be a cute addition to a costume but presents a tripping hazard. Be sure your child’s shoes allow her to walk easily and safely and that they won’t cause her to trip or stumble as she’s crossing the street.

- Soft, flexible props. Make sure any sword, wands, scythes, etc., that are a part of your child’s costume is soft and flexible to avoid injury.

Trick-or-Treating

- Young children should always be accompanied by an adult or responsible teenager.

- Stick to familiar neighborhoods. Older children who are going out without a parent should stay in your neighborhood for safety.

- Never let a child, no matter what their age, trick-or-treat alone. There is safety in numbers, especially when going from door-to-door in the dark.

- Map out a route of exactly where your trick-or-treators will be going and insist that they stick to it at all times.

- Trick-or-treat only at houses that are well lit or that have a porch light on to welcome trick-or-treators. Never go to a dark house or one where a “no trick-or-treating” sign is displayed.

- Make certain to tell your children, no matter what their age, that they are not to enter someone’s house or apartment. And, that they are not to help an adult with anything, no matter what he or she says. If the adult truly needs help he can get another adult to help him.

- Always walk on sidewalks and use cross walks or cross at street corners. Trick-or-treators have been run over when darting out from between parked cars.

- Make sure your children know they are never to go down an alley or cut through an empty lot or field. They should stick to the preplanned route at all times.

- In order to see and to be seen everyone in the group should carry a flashlight.

- Tell your children they are not to eat anything until they get home and have an adult check their goodies. If your children eat a good meal before they go they may be less tempted to dive into their goody bag before you get a chance to check it out.

Parties

– Remove harmful and/or breakable objects from the party area. This includes candles or any open flames that could potentially cause costumes to catch fire.

– If using dry ice in the punch, place small chunks in a bowl of water and float the bowl in the punch. Dry ice contains chemicals that should not be ingested and can also cause burns if pieces find their way in your guests’ mouths.

- Check to be sure that none of your guests have food allergies before you plan your menu. Food allergies are more common now than ever and a bad reaction can put a damper on your festivities, as well as possibly risking the health of a guest.

- Play games that are age appropriate to your group. If there are a variety of ages in your group, consider breaking into smaller groups according to age and playing games accordingly.

- Avoid germ-swapping games to keep health risks at bay. While bobbing for apples and similar games are fun and traditional, they are also breeding grounds for all sorts of germs.

Pets

– Keep pets inside. Halloween is a dangerous time for pets. Keeping them inside and accompanying them when they’re put out to “do their business” will help keep them safe from harm. If you have pets that absolutely have to be outside, keep them in a well lit place where you can see them.

- If you have a pet that might dart out the door when it’s opened for trick-or-treators, consider shutting it in a room with food and water and checking on it periodically through the evening.

- Consider using artificial lights in place of candles for decorating. Many a tail, paw and face have been burned due to traditional candles.

- Keep all candy and wrappers out of your pets’ reach.

- If you’re hosting an adult party where alcohol will be served, be sure to keep it well out of your pets’ reach. While an intoxicated pooch may be humorous, a visit to the vet’s office will not.

Friday October 30th, Baer Insurance will be hosting a safe and warm Halloween Trick-or-Treat event for their clients. From 9am to 3pm, bring your little ones for candy, free goodies, and a picture of them in their costume! For more details, email baer@baerinsurance.com.

Natural Makeup Look Tips and Natural Pageant Makeup Tips – How to Get a Natural Makeup Look for Pageants, Weddings, Kids, Special Events and Everyday

Need ideas for creating a soft natural makeup look for everyday use, a Wedding or
Special Event, or for a Natural Pageant?  Outlined below are suggestions for a natural makeup application for three different age groups.

Natural makeup suggestions for younger girls:

1.  Lip Gloss can smear easily on the face and dress, so if this will be a problem, instead of a Lip Gloss try using a Lip Liner pencil.  Simply turn the Lip Liner pencil tip on its side and ‘color in’ the lips.  The drier consistency of the Lip Pencil will be less likely to smear.
2.  Using a soft medium-sized Blush Brush, apply a soft pink or peach high-pigment Blush to her cheeks, selecting a tone that will coordinate best with her dress color.
3.  Add sparkle to her eyes by applying a small amount of loose Eye Shadow Dust in an iridescent white, pink or peach to her eyelids.
4.  If she can be very still, you can attempt to apply Mascara to her upper lashes.

Natural makeup suggestions for older girls:

1.  To start, dust the face lightly with a loose face powder.
2.  High-pigment Eye Shadows in neutral tones such as browns, beiges, pale pinks and soft peach tones will compliment her eyes without appearing heavy.  If choosing a pale pink or soft peach eye shadow to blend with the brown eye shadow, be sure to select the color that will best coordinate with her dress color.
3.  If she likes a little sparkle on her eyes, use a loose Eye Shadow Dust in a soft iridescent white, pink or peach on the eyelid to add shine.
4.  Lining the eyes along the top lash line with a brown Eye Liner pencil will help her eyelashes appear thicker.
5.  Finish the eyes with Mascara, applying from the base of the eyelashes to the tips.  Mascara can be applied to both top lashes and bottom lashes, if preferred.
6.  Using a soft medium-sized Blush Brush, add color to her cheeks with a soft pink or peach high-pigment Blush, selecting the one that will coordinate best with her dress color.
7.  A Lip Liner pencil can add definition to her lips, just be sure to apply a very soft line in a similar color tone as the Lip Gloss.
8.  Finish with Lip Gloss to add shine.

Natural makeup suggestions for women:

1.  Apply a very lightweight liquid or powder-based foundation to ‘even out’ the skintone.  Carefully select a tone that is an exact match for your skin – check that the color matches in natural daylight.
2.  For dark areas under the eyes, use an opaque concealer product for coverage – carefully pat it in the area.
3.  Blemishes can also be hidden by dotting an opaque concealer directly on the spot.
4.  Brush a loose powder softly over the foundation to ‘set’ it; this step will provide a smooth powder canvas for your powder eye shadows and powder blushers, and will help your colors stay fresher longer.
5.  If your brows are pale, use an Eyebrow product to softly define them.  Comb a clear Eyebrow Fixative product into the brows to help the eyebrow hairs in place.
6.  Next, use a brown Eye Liner pencil to line along the top of the lash line (you can also add a thin line under the outer corner of the eyes for added definition).
7.  Using a sponge-tipped applicator, apply a high-pigment Eye Shadow in brown in the outer corner and crease of the eyelid.  Apply a pale pink or soft peach shadow on the lid.
8.  If you prefer shimmer on the eyelids, add a small amount of loose Eye Shadow Dust in a iridescent white, pink or peach to the eyelids.
9.  Apply Mascara to the eyelashes, from the base to the tips.  Mascara can be applied to both top and bottom eyelashes if preferred.
10.  Next, softly line the lips using a Lip Liner pencil, then fill in with a Lip Gloss in a similar tone.
11.  Apply high-pigment Blush to the cheeks using a soft medium-sized Blush Brush.  Use a light application, then add more until the desired effect is achieved.

Extra tip:  For a sun-kissed look, try sweeping a very small amount of high-pigment Blush in the crease of the eye, over your brown eye shadow.  Don’t overdo!

Another tip for all ages:   For prettiest results, use Lip, Eye and Cheek tones of the same color family.  For example, use a peach blush with a peach lip gloss and a peachy-toned eye shadow to accent the brown eye shadow.

WHY select highly-pigmented makeup colors?   Makeup colors that look best for photography and stage are usually highly-pigmented, meaning they contain strong color pigments and are not sheer.  A highly-pigmented makeup color product will allow the user to apply a small amount to achieve a bit of color or it can provide darker, dramatic color when applied more heavily.  This allows flexibility for the user to achieve her preferred look.  Along with being longer-lasting, the strong color pigment in highly-pigmented makeup colors will hold up against the harsh lighting from cameras and stage lights (no washed-out, ghostly makeup looks).

Weekend Special Ping Rapture V2 Irons For Sale With Free Shipping

Ping Rapture V2 Irons on golfwholesaleshop.com

Engineered to bring golfers maximum forgiveness

the Rapture V2 iron relies on multi-metal technology to launch the ball longer, higher and with more accuracy. A dense tungsten sole weight positions the center of gravity low and away from the face to optimize the launch conditions. An innovation made possible by the lightweight titanium face that frees weight for where it’s needed most—low and on the perimeter.

The high launch angle allows for stronger lofts

so golfers can generate greater distance without sacrificing control. The Custom Tuning Port stabilizes the titanium face to help ensure a solid feel and consistency.

Thoughts about the  Ping Rapture V2 Irons  :

Ping is coming out of the gate with quite possibly, the best “Super Game Improvement” irons on the market. I liked the old Rapture Irons quite a bit, but these, these are on the verge of being illegal. Once again, it’s a shame that a bum like me gets to try out a fab set of irons that he can’t afford. If, however, you are in the market for a new set of irons, and you can’t quite decide between “Game Improvement”, or “Super Game Improvement”, then I’d encourage you to at least try these. This is possibly Ping’s finest set of game improvement clubs since the legendary Beryllium Copper Eye 2′s. Despite the extremely strong lofts, (there are stronger lofts out there, but these push the envelope) , these things are velvety smooth. If you really need the distance–go with the graphite shafts, otherwise, the steel shafts on these are quite good, and help you realize these clubs have a workability that belies there wide soles and slightly chunky top line. Ping has put a lot into these, and they’re not simply a re-hash of the old Rapture Irons by any stretch.

BALANCE and FEEL

I tend to be very picky about irons sporting titanium faces. Many companies have tried, but few have succeeded in getting the hot face, club weight, and overall balance to work well together. I’ve seen everything from the super oversized titanium shovels Tommy Armour used to put out (T 100′s), to some slightly undersized cavity backs put out by Yonex. TaylorMade has made a few, but only the original Burner Irons and the no-longer in production R7 XD’s truly meaured up on an overall ratio of dollars spent vs. corporate hype vs. actual performance basis. These Raptures are there. They will probably see a lot of hype, and like most Pings they ain’t cheap. As I said earlier, the wide soles and slightly chunky top line belie this clubs overall balance. Believe it or not, they are workable. Just realize that you’re hitting an oversized cavity back, and not a diminutive blade. Long and straight is definitely their strong suit, but high cuts, and baby draws are easily factored into the shot equation here too.

This club sports a slightly meagre D1 swing weight, but don’t let that fool you. Club head awareness throughout the swing remains a priority with Ping. I knew at all times where that puppy was, whether I was using the lightweight steel shafts or the ulra-lightweight graphite shafts. The feel at impact isn’t dead at all. Like most titanium faced irons there’s a bit of an insta-pop off of the clubface. Because I tend to play a slightly clingy golf ball I could tell not only the sweet spot shots, but by exactly how much I missed the miss hits as well, and where. They may look a tad chunky, but they sure ain’t clunky. 3 1/2-4 stars on over all feel, w/5 stars vs. all other “Super Game Improvement” clubs. These are an amazing set of irons, but as with the new Rapture Driver–at these prices-00.00-they sure ought to be.

DISTANCE

These are very hot-faced irons, and if you’re currently playing a set of irons any older than 5/7 years, these will gain you an easy club length through both the hotter face and stronger lofts. I found them to be the equal of my TaylorMade R7 XD’s, but my TaylorMades have custom shafts vs. the off the rack variety here. These are definitely a long, and quite possibly the longest set of irons around. I give them an easy 5 stars in this department. My only word of warning is to those of you who have never hit a titanium wedge before. Recalibrating the longer distance took me a bit of getting used to, but as with any short game club, once you’ve got it pegged you’re A-O-K.

TECHNOLOGY and CONSTRUCTION

O.K. so the technology on these isn’t exactly earth shattering anymore. You have a stainless steel body/cradle that sports extreme perimeter weighting. Along the bottom is a wide sole to prevent turf drag, and tungsten weighting to lower the center of gravity. Attached to the cradle is a hot titanium face. So far this is the same line of hype we’ve had tossed at us from most of the multi-material makers. The hot titanium face is centered along the cradle and there is a ” ‘custom tuning port’ to stabilize the titanim face.” All this sounds far too familiar to anyone whose been reading ads for irons over the past five-seven years. The difference here is that Ping’s execution and assemblage of said technology is impeccable.

I cannot tell you the amount of titanium faced irons I’ve hit where distance was a guessing game. Oft times the distance between clubs was just strikingly inconsistent. Ever hit a 7 iron almost as long as the 5 when both were in the same set, and featured the same shaft and flex? (I will not reveal the makers name here as their quality control has improved w/the acquisition of “The Ben Hogan Division of The Top Flite Company.” ) These irons are consistently ten yards longer between clubs. 5 stars for quality control if nothing else. So enough about these club heads, what about those shafts and lofts?

SHAFTS

Ping’s shafts are a pretty good bet on these irons whichever way you go. If you definitely need more distance– go with the graphites. If you’ve got most of your distance, but need more shot making consistency, go with the steel. Here’s the shakedown.
