Using Makeup Artist Products to Contour Your Features
Article by John Howell

What is contouring? It’s simply the act of using makeup to visually change or highlight the appearance of your face.
Want higher cheekbones? A thinner face? A slimmer nose? It’s all about contouring! Makeup artists have used these secrets for years to help clients achieve the look they desire.
Now you can embrace these secrets too with makeup artist products that make contouring easier. Here’s what you’ll need to get started.
Foundation – this is the first product you’ll want when contouring your face. Using a foundation in the color closest to your skin type, gently layer it on as you normally would.
This step will help set the first tone in your work towards contouring your face. It will provide the base, so to speak, to build the rest of your look off of.
Be sure to blend your foundation gently into your hairline and down around the skin of your jaw line and chin.
Bronzer – You’ll want to choose a bronzer that’s one to two shades darker than your natural skin tone. This is the makeup artist product you’ll be using to do the real work of contouring.
If you want to make your cheeks look slimmer, use a large rounded brush to trace a line of bronzer just below your natural cheek bones. Keep the line you make parallel to your jawbone.
If you want to make your nose look slimmer, use the bronzer to create vertical lines on either side of your nose. It will naturally draw the eye to the slimmest part of your nose.
Lastly, if you’d like to slim your chin, trace just under it with the bronzer and take care to blend well.
Powder – To finish off the look, you can’t forget about powder. When you’re contouring, powder is what separates you from looking like you’re wearing makeup and looking natural.
Use a large round or kabuki style brush. Tap off any excess powder and apply in large circles all over your face, being sure to sweep the brush under your chin and jaw to blend the entire look.
Now that you’ve had a small primer in what contouring is, don’t be afraid to experiment with it.
The truth is, contouring isn’t the simplest makeup technique to master, but once you get it, you’ll be able to tailor it to your features with ease. Practice makes perfect!
